For many years I have been painting almost solely outdoors, and for a long time unconsciously so. As an artist I picture myself on the edge of a mountain or in an open field, looking out, receptive to all that comes to me, empty and open as a channel. I am always seeking to commune with something beyond myself, beyond my past, beyond what I know. Going outside to paint means surrender, letting my body struggle and do the work and getting a taste of something that is as of yet unknown to me, outside my conscious understanding, beyond words and wanting to arrive without being judged. Being a painter has been for me the journey of developing an ever deeper trust in the human instinct, the inseparability of our spiritual evolution from the Earth and every living being, and following the profound desire to transform over and over again.
